Stuck in a time warp. Lets be thankful communism is not sustainable.

Well that helped tick the clock away a bit. I’m just waiting for my long weekend at this point.

It’s a bit eerie that those countryside photos look so pleasant. In an alternate reality it’s not difficult to imaging Pyongyang as a Seoul of the north, with traffic, people, electricity, etc.

That said, I remember reading an article a while ago about how Western media is being delivered to the North through portable media players, DVDs, USB sticks, etc. and that the people are slowly realizing that the West isn't what they were told it is. I'm curious as to what the effects will be and whether something revolutionary will occur in North Korea in my lifetime.

I wonder how he got the pictures with him...? No checks?

Very interesting article, thanks for sharing.

SD card up the rectum I suspect.

All jokes aside I was thinking the same thing you would think for sure they would of taken it from him. He probably risked imprisonment for smuggling that out of the country somehow. He was probably a little sweaty going thru customs on the way out.

The Berlin Wall fell. Not real similar, but I was stationed in Germany when it did fall, and a German college professor just a year or two prior to the fall said he thought, “maybe in fifty years.”

It’s hard for me to even fathom the significance of this event since I was two years old at the time; the equivalent here would be the destruction of the demilitarized zone and referring to the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea without laughing at the contradiction.

You hear stories about the South trying to unify, then later on you hear more stories about the North performing more nuclear tests, etc. I’m of South Korean descent, and when I see the people in these photos I see people just like me. I imagine people just trying to live their lives and get by, and just as I don’t like to buy into bullshit politicking and media here, I hope that there are people there that don’t buy into their bullshit politicking and media. We’re in very different realities, but with the slow spread of world media within NK I feel like it’s only a matter of time before change occurs. I think it’d be more surprising if something radical didn’t happen within North Korea in my lifetime.

It is, if you have a sugar daddy propping it up - like the Soviet Union and Cuba, or China and Cuba, or China and North Korea.

A couple friends of Mine took a trip to North Korea. I was in South Korea at the time and visited them the next week but as it took so long to get the visa’s it was impossible for me to join them. It’s interesting this article says Americans must fly, as I understood it they took a bus. One of my Friends is fluent in Korean, and said he talked a lot with their guide in Korean. At one point the guide asked him, if after North Korea collapses and rejoins South Korea, if he would like to move to North Korea to help them learn about the rest of the world. My friend was a little shocked by the question, Uncertain if it was a trick or what. He said yes he would love to, and left it at that.

I mean people are going to pay you for tourism if you don’t let them take photos. Sure there were some he wasn’t supposed to take, but whoever checked on the way out would need to both be able to identify those, and to actually care enough to do something about it.

Yeah, this is a really interesting article, I read it yesterday. North Korea just fascinates me in the way that I don’t really understand. It’s so bad and sad, but so interesting.

Same. I suspect that underlying everything about life there are threats of death and banishment. At the same time, they’re all humans, so there must be a recognition of irony and a conscious surrender by some. I’d be interested in visiting, but I’d be afraid of winding up in prison. And my cameras all use CF cards, which would not fit well in my keister.

That was a pretty good read. Made me wonder though, what do the people living there think of the outside world? Are they even aware of things outside of that country? What is it like to just be born into that country and be so outcasted from the rest of the world?

Certainly makes me very grateful to be living in the US.
